Pocket Pair - A Strong Hand in Texas Hold'em

texas holdem

What's a Pocket Pair?  In flop games like Texas Hold'em, a Pocket Pair is two cards of the same value that are held by a single player that may be used only by that player and which no other player is entitled to see; two cards of the same value held in the pocket -- a strong pocket pair being two aces.

Every Texas Hold'em player loves a Pocket Pair, but it's also a hand that can go bad.  Players new to the game fall into many traps, but the most common scenario is placing more value on small pairs like 3/3 and suited cards than they really should.  As a result, players new to the game continually overplay these cards and get involved in pots that they should have let go at the flop or pre flop. However, even the best player will be tempted as things heat up and will be more likely to play pairs and suited cards.
